Policy Overview

In February 2022, the government of India announced the 2070 net-zero emissions target, as part of its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDCs) at COP26. Also known as the Panchamrit (five nectar elements), the NDCs also included the following climate targets:

  • Reach 500GW Non-fossil energy capacity by 2030,
  • 50 percent of its energy requirements from renewable energy by 2030,
  • Reduction of total projected carbon emissions by one billion tonnes from now to 2030,
  • Reduction of the carbon intensity of the economy by 45 percent by 2030, over 2005 levels.

The government of India stated that the targets were formulated based on the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities, and that it advocated for climate finance and technology transfer to aid developing countries in meeting their climate targets.

Policy Engagement Overview

The aggregated evidence of corporate policy engagement with the 2070 net-zero target shows that the Indian industry is largely supportive of the target.
Engagement with the target was at the highest following its announcement in February 2022, with fewer instances of engagement since then. With India set to announce its revised NDC in 2025, engagement from the Indian industry surrounding this could potentially see an increase.
