Beta Version
InfluenceMap is a global think tank providing data-driven analysis to investors, corporations, governments, global media, and civil society on issues related to climate change and energy. InfluenceMap’s LobbyMap platform assesses corporate engagement with government climate policy and regulations. A full explanation of our methodology can be found here.
This platform showcases InfluenceMap's initial analysis of corporate climate policy engagement in India, through the assessment of twenty of the largest and most climate-relevant companies and eight industry associations operating in the automotive, energy (oil and gas), new energy (renewables and battery), mining, steel, cement, chemicals, electric utilities, IT and telecommunications sectors in India. This Beta version of the platform (available for use in the short term) provides accessible analysis, including rankings and profiles, on corporate engagement with climate policy in India, drawn from a database of over 2,250 individual data points.
Recognizing the limited sample size, especially in comparison to the scale of India’s economy, it is important to note that the analysis may not be representative of all the companies in these sectors. The primary objective of the study is to develop an understanding of corporate climate policy engagement in India and to assess the extent to which the climate policy engagement of these companies is science-aligned.
The platform is directed at a range of stakeholders, including but not limited to: investors in Indian companies as part of InfluenceMap's work with shareholders on climate governance and accountability, Indian companies and industry associations that aim to align their advocacy positions on climate policy with the science of limiting warming to 1.5 °C, and civil society organizations aiming to understand the influence of the corporate sector on climate policy.
The government of India announced a 2070 net zero target at COP26 in 2021, as part of the country’s Panchamrit (five nectar elements) climate action objectives. Corporations in India are extensively involved in influencing the shape and ambition of India’s emerging climate policies to deliver on these emission reduction targets. The companies and industry associations in this analysis are benchmarked against these policy areas.
InfluenceMap has summarized key findings from the platform in a briefing accessible here. The diagram below maps out the climate policy engagement of the largest and most climate-relevant companies operating in India (please see FAQs for how these companies are chosen). The X axis (Performance Band) charts the position of a company and its industry associations towards Paris-aligned climate policy, from oppositional (left) to supportive (right). The Y axis (Engagement Intensity) indicates how actively the company alone is engaging with climate policy, with the most engaged companies at the top of the graph. Hover over the graph to see more details on individual companies, and find each company's full metrics and online profile in the table below.
